Small Crystals, Big Insights: How Electron Diffraction is Transforming Materials, Life Science, and Chemistry Research

Ever wondered how much time and expertise is required to perform ED analysis, from sample preparation to structural solution?

While electron diffraction has opened new possibilities for structural characterization of crystalline powders across many scientific disciplines, it has traditionally required expertise in both crystallography and electron microscopy to generate meaningful data. The development of automated workflows has transformed the field—not only by enhancing accessibility, but also by increasing sample throughput and enabling new types of experiments.

In this session, we will walk through the complete electron diffraction process, including sample preparation, data collection, and structural analysis. We will explore how integrated hardware and software in a dedicated diffractometer streamline workflows, enhancing the efficiency of single-crystal structural solutions and making bulk powder analysis by ED a practical approach.

Enhancing Pharma Processes

Have you ever faced setbacks or surprises in drug discovery or pre-formulation because of difficulty synthesizing desired compounds or because of their unexpected behaviors? Challenges like polymorphs, absolute configurations, inconsistent solubility, stability issues, or failed synthesis validation are often traced back to an incomplete understanding of the crystal structure.

Knowing the crystal structure of your new compound is essential during the discovery phase to identify it unambiguously, optimize drug efficacy and predict performance. It answers critical questions about molecular configuration, polymorphism, solvate formation, or salt/co-crystal identification—insights that can shape the success of later development stages.

Small Crystals, Big Insights: How Electron Diffraction is Transforming Materials, Life Science, and Chemistry Research

Has your research ever been significantly slowed down or even halted because you could not establish what a compound exactly was, what its molecular structure or absolute configuration was, whether polymorphs or impurities coexisted with the main compound or how the solid-state structure could explain a compound’s behavior and physical properties?

Critical to answer these questions is the information about the crystalline state (unit cell parameters and crystal structure). Unfortunately, traditional analytical methods may not be able to deliver all the answers. Even X-ray crystallography can be limiting if samples with suitable crystallinity, dimensions and quantity are lacking. Electron diffraction offers a new solution by providing high-resolution structural insights from submicron-size samples. Scratching the bottom of a beaker to gather nanograms of a crystalline powder may suffice for electron diffraction study.

WEBINAR THERMAL ANALYSIS

Join us for a free 45-minute webinar and discover how ThermoMass Photo can simultaneously measure sample mass changes and heat flow, together with the mass-to-charge ratio (m/z) of ions for reaction products released from the sample during the analysis process of a programmed temperature. In this webinar, you will learn the basic principles of ThermoMass Photo and see various application examples.

TOPIQ | XTALAB SYNERGY-ED: SINGLE CRYSTAL STRUCTURES FROM POWDERS

Despite its simplicity and affordability, the XtaLAB Mini II makes no compromise on the research-grade results it produces. To demonstrate it, we will perform a live analysis of an organic crystal of cytidine, using the Rigaku program CrysAlisᴾʳᵒ for screening and data collection/processing and Olex2 software for structure solution and refinement. All steps will be covered, from crystal centering on the goniometer to running CheckCif on the final model and preparing necessary files for IUCr submission.
